The Era Glaciale retail design project’s objective is to create a unique space that integrates a modern Italian ice cream shop in a traditional Chinese building. Two cultures, two different eras, merge in the same location bringing the richness of each at its top.The design aims at being as respectful as possible towards the Chinese architectural heritage while creating a powerful and contemporary image for the new ice cream shop.
Customer’s space and kitchen are divided by a special piece of furniture that serves as a bench, a gelato window display, a checkout, and as the kitchen door, using a variable and specific section for each feature along its length.
The facade is composed by sharp black metal mullions and glass pane windows. This is a simple but strong facade design that contrasts with the red columns and the wood crafted panes of the old Chinese building. It also helps at clearing the interior space and attracting clients to come in.
The interior space is mainly white, creating a neutral atmosphere, where the colorful ice cream is the central feature of the scene. Clear and straight lines organize the space and give it a dimensional orientation. The facade and the wood beams of the ceiling give rhythm to the space, whereas the stone floor represents a solid base and implements the static feeling of the place. As for the old red columns, they impose themselves, breaking into the prevailing calm and giving an interesting contrast to the room.
