Daegu Gosan Public Library
We designed a library that provides a dynamic space and facilitates the interactions between people and information, that is flexible to accommodate the evolving ways in which people access and interact with information. The new Daegu Gosan Public Library will offer a cultural meeting place for the community by providing an open, multi-media focused facility for the public. It is the place for culture, exchange of ideas and the access of information.
The building uses the maximum footprint allowed (60%) and maintains a contextual height. 40% of the site consists of public gathering space. The form of the building comes from merging two parameters: programmatic efficiency and contextual urban volumetric relationships. The program is separated into two main bodies that are spatially connected through the open atrium. Glazing and louvers provide the building an envelope and complement the ordered rhythm of the triangulated skylights that illuminate the interior space. The mass of the building is linear and closed on the east and west sides, where the program is located, and it is open to its fullest on the northern and southern facades, in order to generate an internal connection between the front park and the back square. The north and south fronts of the building are either extended or retracted to create covered public spaces, entrances, and address the best views and context to make the building visible from the main street and direct the view of users to the surroundings.
